Guruji, I wish to understand the effects of curses or black magic on a person’s karma. Do curses alter the natural course of one’s life, interfering with their destined path? Or are they simply a part of one’s karmic cycle—meaning, if someone falls victim to a curse, was it always meant to happen as a result of their past karma?

Dear Sneha,
Everything that happens to us is intricately connected to our past actions and karmic influences. Karma is like an invisible thread weaving the course of our life, and external forces, including black magic or curses, cannot easily disrupt this divine order unless there is an underlying karmic connection.
In cases of collective tragedy—such as an airplane crash—not every individual onboard may have the exact karma to die in such an event. However, those with weaker energy fields or unresolved karmic patterns may be drawn into the larger karmic force of others. This doesn’t mean their destiny was sealed, but rather that their own lack of spiritual strength made them susceptible.
When it comes to black magic or curses, they are usually not random but rather directed with intention by someone who harbors negativity toward the victim. This indicates a personal karmic link between the two individuals. No one is accidentally cursed—it happens within the framework of past interactions, either in this life or previous ones.
However, karma is not set in stone. Our present actions can reshape our destiny. If a person has committed wrongs in a past life but transforms themselves through acts of kindness, devotion, and spiritual growth, the negative karmic effects can be greatly reduced or even nullified. The divine law is just, but it also allows for redemption through spiritual effort.
As Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa’s consort, Sharada Devi, beautifully said: "If one is destined to lose an arm due to past karma, sincere devotion and spiritual practice may reduce it to just a minor scratch." Love for the Divine generates a powerful protective energy that lessens the impact of negative karma.
